Arctic Ice Pilot starts planning for logistics and guiding operations in the Arctic for 2021

Ashley Perrin is departing S/Y Qilak today in Tromso, after a two-weeks sailing reconnaissance in Norway. Antarctic Ice Pilot provided consultancy services during the design and build of this high latitude explorer yacht which was launched in Holland in 2018.

As well as an opportunity to sail the yacht for the first time Ashley’s main focus was to learn first-hand about destinations and facilities available in Northern Norway, gateway to Arctic adventure in East Greenland, Svalbard and beyond.

Qilak would also normally be chartering in Svalbard at this time of year. Since the archipelago was closed to visitors, instead Ashley and Qilak cruised up to and above 70N, moving twice a day to gain experience of new anchorages and ports between Bodo and Hammerfest.

2020 was to be the first year of operations for Arctic Ice Pilot, with ice pilot, planning and logistics services being provided to a 40m sailing yacht (West Greenland) and a 70m motor superyacht (Svalbard).  Ashley’s own sailboat, Santana, remains ashore in Nuuk, Greenland, also stranded by Covid.
